Vestibular Rehabilitation

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy?

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) is a specific and individualized treatment and exercise program designed by a physiotherapist to help with dizziness and balance disorders.
People with vestibular (inner ear/balance) disorders may experience any of the following symptoms: vertigo, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, visual disturbance, fatigue, and gait imbalances.  Exercises usually involve eye, head and body movements to help retrain the vestibular system. Vestibular impairment is an underlying cause in as many as 45% of people complaining of dizziness.

The Exercise Goals:

  • Habituation – these exercises are used to treat symptoms of dizziness that are produced because of self-motion or produced because of visual stimuli
  • Gaze Stabilization – used to improve control of eye movements so vision can be clear during head movement.
  • Balance Training – used to improve steadiness so that daily activities for self-care, work, and leisure can be performed successfully.

Who would benefit from VRT?

If you are currently experiencing dizziness or vertigo or have in the past, it is worthwhile to be assessed by a Vestibular Therapist as there may be permanent deficits in your balance, coordination, and/or vision.

What are the exercises like?

The exercises are provided based on each patients’ individualized assessment and tailored to their specific case. Most of the exercises themselves are not strenuous but require consistency to see benefits over longer periods of time. They may aggravate symptoms at first, but a steady decline should be observed soon after.

How long will I be in therapy for?

Your vestibular rehabilitation will be based on your individual evaluation. Treatment sessions are typically 60-minutes long and can range in the number of sessions. Depending on the cause, the resolution of the problem could take several weeks or the issue may be chronic.

Cost per session?

The initial assessment costs $130 for a comprehensive clinical examination and each follow-up session is a standard charge of $75. Vestibular therapy is covered under most private insurance plans for physiotherapy.
