Soccer players’ ACL injury risk may drop after a warm-up

Female soccer players are prone to anterior cruciate ligament injuries of the knee, but a study has found that a specific 15-minute warm-up significantly reduced the risk of ACL injuries. The study, presented this past February at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Francisco, focused on a group of 4,564 female Swedish players ages 12 to 17. Of those players, 2,479 were randomly assigned to do a 15-minute warm-up and 2,085 were part of a control group. The neuromuscular warm-up was done twice weekly throughout the playing season and consisted of six exercises concentrating on knee control and core stability. Injuries were assessed by doctors and physical therapists. The warm-up group saw a 64% reduction in the rate of ACL injuries as well as drops in severe knee injuries. KNEEFIT in Florida

Knee injuries are extremely common in sports.  Damage to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is serious - and may end a career. Fortunately there are steps athletes (and their coaches) can take to reduce the risk.  PREVENTION IS THE KEY!  ACL injury prevention programs have been shown to decrease ACL injury rates by 46-90%.  Doug Gilroy, Melissa Prokop and Allison Gaudet have developed KNEEFIT, our ACL injury prevention program.  Over the past year, we've been pleased to present KNEEFIT to many school and sports organizations in and around the Edmonton and Sherwood Park areas and work with athletes retraining the neuromuscular system to reduce stress on the ACL.  In February, Doug was able to share our KNEEFIT program with BFUT (Instituto Brasileiro de Futebol) a Brazilian soccer academy in Boca Raton, Florida.
