FAQs

FAQ's

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No, you do not need a referral. Physical therapists are highly trained in the assessment and treatment of soft tissue injuries. These include ligament sprains, muscle strains, tendonitis, joint and bone injuries, contusions and overuse injuries. However, if you do see a Doctor and have a referral, please bring it with you. Some insurance companies will require that you submit it to be reimbursed your treatment fees.
How soon after an injury should I begin physical therapy?
Studies have shown that those who begin treatment immediately following injury have overall shorter recovery times. You may wish to consult with your physician immediately following your injury to ensure that are no reasons why physical therapy would not be appropriate.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
On your first visit, your physical therapist will do a complete assessment of your injury to determine exactly what the problem is. Based on the findings and your goals, you and your therapist will determine the best treatment plan to help resolve your injury. You should plan on one hour for the first session.
What should I bring?
You will need to bring your Alberta Health Care Card. If you are a WCB or Motor Vehicle Accident patient, please also bring your claim number and name of case manager. You should wear comfortable clothing and be able to expose the body part that we will need to examine. We do keep shorts and gowns available if you aren’t able to bring the proper clothing with you
Does Alberta Health Care cover Physical Therapy?
No. Alberta Health Care has not provided funding for physical therapy since 1995.
What are my options for funding?
Alberta Health (AH) provides funding for a limited number of new patient assessments each day. You may choose to pay privately for your assessment if no funded appointments are available on the day you wish to begin treatment. AH provides further limited funding for patients who have had a recent fracture or surgery or who have a very severe injury. Private Insurance: Many extended health care plans through your work, your spouse or your own plan have provisions for physical therapy. Check your plan to see what is covered. Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB): WCB will cover your first visit –the initial assessment and treatment. Further treatments are approved by WCB. Motor Vehicle Accidents: Call your insurer immediately after the accident. You must seek treatment from a primary care provider within 10 days of the accident to be eligible for funded treatments.
